Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn square off as lifelong Beverly Hills rivals, obsessed with one-upping each other at any cost, up to and including stealing each other’s mousey boyfriend (Bruce Willis). The secret weapon comes in the form of a magic potion promising eternal youth peddled by a super sexy septuagenarian (Isabella Rossellini), which is eagerly gulped down by both would-be glamour queens. And indeed, the women are restored to their youthful beauty… while also transforming into unkillable vixens.
Robert Zemeckis’s macabre treat is a hilarious and pointed sendup of Hollywood’s obsession with youth and beauty—or, as Streep recently observed, “it’s sort of a documentary on aging in Los Angeles now.”
